Mulu Headhunters' Trial 5D4N

Itinerary

   
Day 1 : (Dinner provided)
Depart for Mulu by late morning or noon flight. Register at Park HQ and check-in to Royal Mulu Resort or Park Chalet.

Proceed to Deer and Lang Caves to tour limestone formations. At the end of tour, wait at Deer Cave entrance gallery before making way to the Bat Observatory to watch exodus of bats from the Deer Cave. Trek back to hotel or chalet.

Experience: Unique plant life and lush tropical forest, jungle trekking, spectacular limestone formations, exodus of millions of bats, and night jungle-walk (optional).

Day 2 : (Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner provided)
After breakfast check-out of hotel/chalet and proceed by longboat to visit Wind and Clearwater Caves. Enroute stop at the Penan settlement of Batu Bungan who offer handmade handicrafts for sale.

After exploring Wind and Clearwater Caves, lunch at the Clearwater Shelter. You can opt to swim at Clearwater pool (bring change of clothes). After lunch, continue by boat to Kuala Litut. From there, begin a 2-3 hour trek through ancient equatorial rainforests to Gunung Api Base Camp (Camp 5). Overnight at Camp 5

Experience – Longboat ride, more unique limestone formations, legendary Batu Bungan cliff, rare plant life (orchid), meet the Penan (some are still hunter-gatherer), jungle trekking, handicrafts.

Day 3 : (Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner provided)
After a hearty breakfast, commence a 3-4 hour ascend to the peak of Gunung Api to see Pinnacles (there are some very steep sections and climbing with ropes and ladders). 2.5-hrs uphill and 1.5-hrs by ropes and ladders to viewpoint overlooking Pinnacles. Enjoy your lunch while looking out over the Pinnacles.

Start descend back down to Camp 5 (3-4 hrs) for overnight stay. Rest of afternoon and evening is at own leisure. Those who opt not to climb can proceed onto the Kerangas Trail (2 hour trek) or to Melinau Gorge (3-4 hour trek).

Experience: Unique Mulu Pinnacles, mountain climbing challenge, jungle trekking, unique plant and wild life, or just relax in the cool Melinau River.

Day 4 : (Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner provided)
An early breakfast followed by trekking along the time-worn “Headhunters’ Trail” through ancient equatorial rainforest to Kuala Terikan (4-5 hours) and crossing the river on a ‘monkey bridge’. Thereon transfer by boat to Mentawai Park HQ for lunch.

After lunch, proceed to Rumah Satu at Kuala Mendalam (Tabun tribe longhouse). Rest of the afternoon is at own leisure observing and experiencing the lifestyle and activities of the local communities. Feel free to walk around and interact with the community.

In the evening you have the option of arranging a cultural Iban-style performance (optional costs) and have a taste of the locally brewed rice wine during dinner.

Day 5 : (Breakfast provided)
After breakfast, transfer to Kuala Mendamit to catch land transport to Limbang (1 hour ride) and finally to catch the flight back to Miri.
